Humane Education enables young people to approach human rights, environmental preservation, and animal protection as interconnected and integral dimensions of a healthy, just society.
Tour and Lectures
The Humane Education Department's school programs are approximately one hour in length and were developed as an educational resource to support teachers in meeting their curriculum objectives. As educators of responsible pet ownership, empathy and violence prevention, we promote the development of emotional and social intelligence by offering quality programs at the shelter or in the classroom. Links to specific outcomes outlined in Alberta's Education curriculum are provided in each program description.
Our tours and lectures address:
- Responsible pet ownership
- Domestication of dogs and cats
- Canadian animal welfare laws
- Animal related careers
- Co-existing with urban wildlife
- Violence prevention (animal cruelty, bullying, dating and domestic violence)
With the exception of our My Pet and Me Program fee of $35, all school programs are $50 per session. Please note: A $25 non refundable administration fee is charged for presentations that are booked and cancelled more than 2 weeks in advance. If the presentation is booked and cancelled with less than 2 weeks notice, the full cost of the presentation will be invoiced to the booking school or after school group. Humane Education: The Empathy Connection
Our 75 minute presentation was very well received at the 2009 Teacher's Convention as we provide teachers with curriculum based ideas for lessons which support social and emotional learning (SEL). We discuss the importance of empathy training and illustrate the valuable role animals play in empathy development. Age-appropriate resources are provided.
