Warning to Cat Owners: Keep Them Indoors

August 31st, 2015

Calgary, AB — Immediate Release

Calgary Humane Society, Calgary Police Service and Animal & Bylaw Services are warning cat owners to keep their pets indoors following several recent incidents where cats have been found mutilated, severely injured or killed.

Calgary Humane Society Protections Officers have investigated the unusual or suspicious deaths of 12 outdoor cats this year alone. Sadly, all these cases could have been prevented.

“While some cat owners will argue depriving a cat of outdoor freedom decreases its’ quality of life, the reality is quite the opposite. There are a multitude of dangers posed to cats allowed to wander at will. Cats can be hit by cars causing catastrophic injuries, disease and pregnancy are concerns for the animal as well as a public health issue, and predation results in the deaths of dozens of cats every year. Cats at large are also prime targets for cruelty, whether that be trapping and inappropriate disposal or easy targets for those looking to abuse animals” says Brad Nichols, Senior Manager, Animal Cruelty & Investigations.

Beyond these risks, depriving a cat of adequate food, water or shelter is an offense under the Animal Protection Act and allowing a cat to run at large is an offense under the Responsible Pet
Ownership Bylaw.

Exotic Complexities: Climate Edition!

Exotic complexities climate-300

Hello again, CHS Supporters! We hope you are enjoying exotics month here on the blog. For the entire month of August we will be tackling all things related to exotic pets, so if you have a question or topic that you would like to see covered, let us know on our Facebook page!

This month we are going to be wading in to some murky but important waters: the complexity of keeping exotic animals.

Now, to get the conversation off to a good start, it’s important to note there is no way one blog entry could cover all the complexities of exotic pets. Every exotic animal will have a different set of requirements and there is even debate within the veterinary field when it comes to the ‘best’ way to keep certain species.

One of the number one issues surrounding the keeping of exotic pets in captivity is housing, so we’re going to kick off this series with an in-depth look at an important element to any home: climate! (more…)

Duke Makes Forevers happen

Hi everyone!

It’s me, Duke! Your OFFICIAL 2015 Cocktails for Critters Spokesdog!

Last time I told you a little bit about what my early life looked like, but that story wasn’t just about me. In my old house I had a family too. I had a mom and some siblings… all of us shared the same life. We were all bred to look a certain way, even though our looks meant we couldn’t live normal lives. My friends at Calgary Humane Society say we were all in need of treatment. (more…)

“But I’ll only be 5 minutes!”

I'll only be 5 min

We get it! It’s a perfect day for a picnic. Pack up the dog, head out in the car and just pit stop at the grocery store on the way, right?

Unfortunately, there is no such thing as “only” 5 minutes when it comes to a pet in a hot car.

Things happen. Maybe there was a line-up, maybe you realized you needed ‘just one more thing’, maybe you ran in to an old friend. Pretty soon “only” 5 minutes becomes 10, 15 or 30 minutes. In the air conditioned store, you may not even realize how fast time has passed, but for a dog in a hot car, even 5 minutes can feel like an eternity. (more…)

What is an exotic pet?

Today, in honour of exotics month here on the blog, we wanted to tackle the important question… What the heck is an “exotic” pet anyways?

If you have found yourself wondering this you are not alone! In fact, we found several different definitions while looking for the answer! (more…)
