There are three different ways that youth of all ages can become involved in helping animals during the school year! Our Youth Involvement Opportunities are a fun way to interact with the animals and learn leadership, compassion, care, empathy and respect. Are you already interested? Browse our three clubs below!

Animal Apprentices (Ages 7-9)

10 week program 5:00pm – 6:30pm starting Tuesday September 21st – On Sale Now!

The goal of the Animal Apprentices Club is to learn as much as possible about all animals. The more we know about animals and their needs, the better we are able to be their friends. In the Animal Apprentices we learn about the humane treatment of all animals.

The Animal Apprentice members develop a keen interest in all animals, domestic and wild, learn about their environment and habitats and explore the many facets of an animal shelter through activities, crafts and animal guests!

Our Animal Apprentices will…

  • Learn about the needs of all domestic animals in the shelter
  • Be able to identify body language signs for dogs, cats, bunnies and more
  • Acquire skills to understand how to respond to different body languages of animals
  • Learn ways to be a pet’s best friends and how to properly play with pets
  • Learn about animal habitats, and pet care
  • Create fun and engaging animal crafts
  • Experience special animal visits to help develop skills and knowledge about the animals at CHS

Animal Allies (Ages 10-12)

Over 16 Years Old?

Please check our volunteer page. Where there are volunteer needs at the shelter, we post applications for the positions and shifts that we (and the animals!) need support with. There are volunteer positions that are available at Calgary Humane Society that have a minimum age requirement of 14 years old (like being a Bunny Hugger). If those positions are not available or the shifts we are placing for do not fit your schedule when you are exploring, please keep checking back!
