Barbara Walmer, CPDT-KSA, CBCC-KA, KPA CTP
Department Head of Animal Behaviour
Barbara has been with Calgary Humane Society since 2002, dedicating herself to the understanding and betterment of animal behaviour within the shelter and community. Her role allows her to help owners and dogs cope with a spectrum of issues through group classes and private consultations as well as guide and develop shelter protocols and philosophies on animal behavior.
Barbara’s professional experience with dogs dates back to when she was just 14 years old working in a local veterinary clinic as a vet assistant, developing behaviour information resources for clientele. From there, she began her professional dog training career competing in Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) obedience trials and expanding her knowledge and understanding of the science behind how animals learn.
As a lifelong learner, Barbara constantly seeks out the latest research in canine behaviour science. She has received certification in Tellington TTouch Practitioner (Level 2), Karen Pryor Academy (KPA), Certified Training Partner (CTP) and was among the first to receive the following: Certified Pet Dog Trainer Knowledge & Skills Assessed (CPDT-KSA), TAGteach (Level 1) and Certified Behaviour Consultant Canine (Knowledge Assessed) and is a member of Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT), and Canadian Kennel Club (CKC). As one of the most experienced and qualified dog trainers in Calgary, Barbara is proud to have trained and certified many local professional trainers and regularly presents and speaks internationally at professional dog training and animal welfare conferences and agencies.
Outside of work, Barbara enjoys training and competing with her own dogs and shares her home with four Golden Retrievers, and a Papillion.
