Be a Hero: Experience the Joy of the CHS Fur-Low Program

The Calgary Humane Society’s (CHS) Fur-Low program is more than just a chance to spend time with a dog—it’s an opportunity to be a hero in the life of a shelter dog. This vital initiative is designed to reduce stress and enhance the well-being of our dogs by providing them with enriching, short-term escapes from the shelter environment. As a Fur-Low volunteer, you’re not just giving a dog a break—you’re giving them a better chance at finding a forever home. Here’s how you can make a life-saving difference:

  • Embark on Adventures: Take a dog on a scenic hike through approved areas like Fish Creek Park, Kananaskis, Bragg Creek, and other breathtaking locations. These outdoor excursions are a fantastic way for both you and the dog to connect with nature, providing them with a much-needed mental and physical boost.
  • Create Backyard Bliss: Offer a dog a peaceful retreat in your backyard, where they can stretch their legs, play, and enjoy the simple pleasures of being outdoors. These moments of tranquility can be a game-changer for their emotional health.
  • Host a Cozy House Break: Open your home to a dog in need of a change of scenery. Providing them with a comfortable and loving environment, even for a short time, can make a world of difference in their demeanor and adoptability.

Be Part of a Life-Saving Mission

Studies show that a dog is 5 times more likely to be adopted after going on a short-term shelter break. If you extend that break to a longer-term foster placement, their chances of finding a forever home increase by an incredible 14 times. By becoming a Fur-Low volunteer, you are directly contributing to these life-saving statistics and playing a crucial role in helping dogs transition from the shelter to a loving home.

The Fur-Low program requires dogs to be picked up and returned to the shelter on the same day during operating hours. However, if you find yourself forming a special bond and want to extend the adventure, you can request to shift to an overnight foster placement with approval from our dedicated Foster Team.

Join the Fur-Low program today and experience the joy of being a hero in a shelter dog’s life—all while enjoying the companionship and unconditional love that only a dog can provide.
