About Animal Adoption

Make Your Home A Forever Home

Thank you for considering adopting an animal from Calgary Humane Society. Our goal with every adoption is to create great matches between animals and adopters. To learn more about our adoption process, visit our How it Works page.

Discover How It Works

Step one is searching our database of available animals. You can view photos and read their bios to determine if you think the animal is the right companion for your family. You can find more information about adoption fees and budgeting for your new pet in the “Adoption” section of our website. If you have further questions, you can contact us at any time. Once you’ve reviewed all the relevant information online, walk-in or schedule an adoption appointment to meet with an adoption counsellor one-on-one.

Please Note: Both appointments and walk-ins are subject to daily availability limits. While an appointment guarantees the attention of our team, walk-ins may experience wait times.

Why You Should Adopt a Pet from Calgary Humane Society

At Calgary Humane Society, we are often asked why adopting a pet is better than purchasing a pet from a pet store or breeder. There are several benefits to adoption, for both the adopter and the animal being adopted.

Adoption Saves Lives

The most essential reason why you should adopt a pet from an animal shelter is that adoption saves lives. At Calgary Humane Society, we pride ourselves on the fact that every single healthy and adoptable animal can stay at our facility until they are adopted. Not only does adopting an animal give that pet a new lease on life, it opens new space at Calgary Humane Society, so another animal can be rescued and begin their journey to adoption.

Health & Wellness are Prioritized

Part of every adoption story at Calgary Humane Society is a full health exam for every pet, ensuring they’re set up for a healthy life. Our outstanding veterinarian team cares for each animal by treating any existing health issues—including dental needs. They also spay, neuter, and give each pet all their required shots. While these procedures would ordinarily cost thousands of dollars, at Calgary Humane Society, it’s all included with the basic adoption fee.

A Lifetime of Support

Our dedication to your pets’ care doesn’t stop when they head out the door with you. Once your new family member is settled in at home, you will continue to have access to valuable Calgary Humane Society services. You’ll go home with an adoption success package to support you and your new pet and you’ll have access to our team any time you have questions or need support—including access to our free behaviour help line.
